Overview – Best Places to Visit in Nepal

Nepal is one of the most extraordinary travel destinations in the world — a small Himalayan kingdom that packs in towering mountain peaks, ancient temple complexes, vibrant living culture, and serene lakeside retreats within a compact geography. Home to eight of the world's ten highest peaks including Mount Everest, Nepal draws trekkers, pilgrims, families, and curious travellers from every corner of the globe. Kathmandu, the capital city, is a living museum of Newar art and architecture. Its UNESCO World Heritage Sites — including Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, and Patan Durbar Square — showcase centuries of Hindu and Buddhist coexistence. The city's narrow alleys, incense-scented air, and the constant sound of temple bells create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in South Asia. Pokhara, Nepal's second city, sits at the edge of Phewa Lake with a stunning backdrop of the Annapurna mountain range. Known for its laid-back cafes, adventure sports, and serene lakeside promenade, Pokhara offers a perfect counterpoint to Kathmandu's intensity. Sunrise views of Machapuchare (Fish Tail) and the Annapurna massif from Sarangkot are among the most photographed moments in Himalayan travel. For Indian travellers, Nepal holds a special spiritual significance — Pashupatinath Temple is one of the holiest Shiva temples in the world, drawing thousands of Hindu pilgrims year-round. The en-route Manokamana Temple, accessible by cable car, is a powerful goddess shrine revered across the subcontinent. Nepal is also one of the most visa-friendly destinations for Indian citizens — no visa is required, and Indian currency (₹100 and above) is widely accepted. **How to Reach Nepal from India:** Direct flights connect Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Varanasi, and Lucknow to Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. Flight time from Delhi is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Carriers include IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Nepal Airlines. Overland entry is possible at the Sunauli–Bhairahawa border crossing (for Pokhara) or the Raxaul–Birgunj crossing (for Kathmandu), both fully accessible to Indian nationals. **Weather:** Kathmandu sits at 1,400 m — temperatures range from 2–10°C in winter (December–February) to 25–30°C in summer. Pokhara at 822 m is warmer year-round. The monsoon season (June–September) brings heavy rainfall. October–November and February–April are the most comfortable months for sightseeing. **Local Transport:** Within Kathmandu, taxis and app-based rides (Pathao, InDrive) are the most convenient options. Metered taxis are cheaper but require negotiation — agree on price before boarding. In Pokhara, electric rickshaws and taxis cover Lakeside and the main attractions. The Kathmandu–Pokhara inter-city journey is best done by private vehicle or tourist bus (NPR 600–1,000 per seat on tourist coaches). Things to Do in Nepal

Top attractions and experiences for your Nepal tour package

Pashupatinath Temple

One of the most sacred Hindu temples in the world, Pashupatinath is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Pashupati (Lord of Animals). Located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, this UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 5th century AD. The main temple is a two-tiered pagoda with a gilded roof and silver doors. The ghats along the river are sites of open-air cremations, making it a profoundly spiritual experience. Only Hindus are allowed inside the main shrine, but the entire complex is open to all visitors.

Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple)

Perched atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, Swayambhunath is one of the oldest and most revered Buddhist sites in Nepal, dating back over 2,500 years. The all-seeing eyes of Buddha painted on the four sides of the stupa's tower are the most recognizable symbol of Nepal. The complex includes numerous shrines, prayer wheels, and vajras. Hundreds of rhesus macaques inhabit the complex — earning it the nickname 'Monkey Temple'. The panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley from the hilltop is spectacular.

Phewa Lake, Pokhara

The second largest lake in Nepal, Phewa (or Fewa) Lake is the crown jewel of Pokhara. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Annapurna mountain range, the lake offers one of the most scenic boating experiences in South Asia. The reflection of the snowcapped Machapuchare (Fish Tail Peak) in the calm waters is breathtaking. The famous Tal Barahi Temple, a two-storied pagoda dedicated to the goddess Barahi, sits on an island in the middle of the lake and is accessible only by rowboat.

Manokamana Temple

Located in Gorkha district en route from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Manokamana Temple is dedicated to Goddess Manokamana — the wish-fulfilling goddess. The temple sits atop a hill at 1,302 m altitude and is accessible via Nepal's first cable car (10-minute ride from Cheres). The panoramic views of the Marsyangdi River valley and surrounding peaks from the cable car are magnificent. The temple is considered highly auspicious and is a popular pilgrimage stop for travellers on the Kathmandu-Pokhara highway.

Bindhyabasini Temple, Pokhara

One of the oldest and most important temples in Pokhara, Bindhyabasini Temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati (an incarnation of Durga). Located on a hillock in the old bazaar area, the temple offers a panoramic view of Pokhara city and the surrounding mountains. The temple is especially vibrant during festivals like Dashain and Teej, when thousands of devotees gather for prayers and cultural celebrations. A peaceful courtyard with old peepal trees surrounds the main shrine.

Boudhanath Stupa

One of the largest spherical stupas in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Boudhanath is the spiritual centre of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. The massive mandala-shaped stupa dominates the northeastern outskirts of Kathmandu. Surrounded by over 50 Tibetan Buddhist monasteries (gompas), the stupa is a living religious site where monks, pilgrims, and tourists walk the kora (circumambulation path) together. The atmosphere at dusk, when butter lamps are lit and monks begin their evening prayers, is deeply moving.

Nepal Travel Guide – Tips & Advice

  • 1Indian citizens do not need a visa to enter Nepal — carry a valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar card, passport, or voter ID).
  • 2Indian currency notes of ₹100, ₹200, ₹500, and ₹2,000 are accepted across Nepal. Smaller denominations may not be accepted.
  • 3The best time for sightseeing is early morning — temples are less crowded and the mountain views are clearest before 10 AM.
  • 4Carry light layers — Kathmandu can be cool in the mornings and evenings even in spring and autumn. Pokhara is warmer but can get chilly at night.
  • 5Respect temple etiquette — remove footwear before entering temples, dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), and do not take photos inside inner sanctuaries without permission.
  • 6The Kathmandu to Pokhara highway via Manokamana takes 6–7 hours by road. The scenic drive through river valleys and mountain passes is itself a highlight of the trip.
  • 7Carry a small first aid kit and basic medicines — altitude in Kathmandu (1,400 m) and Pokhara (822 m) is mild and rarely causes altitude sickness for most travellers.
  • 8Bargaining is acceptable in local markets — especially in Thamel (Kathmandu) and Lakeside (Pokhara) — but always remain respectful and friendly.
  • 9Photography at Pashupatinath during cremation ceremonies requires sensitivity and discretion. Always ask permission before photographing people in mourning.
  • 10Book hotels in advance during peak season (October–November and February–April) as Pokhara and Kathmandu fill up quickly.
  • 11Local transport: In Kathmandu, use taxis or app-based rides (Pathao, InDrive) — agree on price before boarding unmetered taxis. In Pokhara, electric rickshaws cover Lakeside and key attractions cheaply.
  • 12Weather by season: October–November (15–25°C) and February–April (18–28°C) are ideal. December–January is cold at night (Kathmandu drops to 2–5°C). June–September is monsoon — avoid for sightseeing.
  • 13How to reach from India: Fly direct to Kathmandu from Delhi (1h 45m), Mumbai, Kolkata, or Varanasi. Overland entry at Sunauli–Bhairahawa border (near Pokhara) or Raxaul–Birgunj border (near Kathmandu) — both open to Indian nationals without visa.
