Dubai — The Dream Destination That's Closer Than You Think
For most Indian travellers, Dubai is the gateway to international travel — close enough (2.5 hours from Mumbai), visa-straightforward enough, and comfortable enough that it works as both a first-timer's trip and a sophisticated repeat destination. But Dubai is also genuinely extraordinary — a city that did not exist in its current form 50 years ago, built on a desert, that has become one of the top 10 most visited cities in the world.
Visa and Entry
Apply for a UAE tourist visa through the airline you're flying with (Emirates, Air Arabia, or IndiGo all offer visa assistance) or through a registered travel agent. The process is straightforward:
- 30-day single entry: AED 250–350 (approximately ₹5,600–7,800)
- Apply online, processing: 2–4 business days
- Passport must have minimum 6 months validity and 2 blank pages
What to Do in Dubai (5 Days)
Day 1 — Arrival + Old Dubai Check in, recover from the flight, and spend the afternoon in Deira. Take an abra (wooden water taxi, AED 1) across Dubai Creek. Walk through the Gold Souk and Spice Souk. Have dinner in one of the many Indian restaurants in Bur Dubai — you'll find authentic Kerala fish curry, Mumbai street food, and Rajasthani dal baati all within a few minutes of each other.
Day 2 — Downtown Dubai and Burj Khalifa This is the show-stopper day. Head to Dubai Mall in the morning (opens 10am, but the Burj area looks best in daylight). Walk around the Dubai Fountain (shows at 1pm and every 30 minutes from 6pm–11pm). Book the Burj Khalifa At The Top online in advance — visit at sunset for both day and night city views. The tower closes at midnight.
Day 3 — Desert Safari The desert is Dubai's natural landscape and a safari is non-negotiable. Book a half-day trip (pick-up around 2:30pm, return 10pm) through a reputable operator — includes 4WD dune bashing, camel ride, sandboarding, henna, belly dance performance, and a BBQ dinner under the stars in a Bedouin camp. One of the best evenings you'll have in the Middle East.
Day 4 — Palm Jumeirah and JBR Beach Explore the Palm Jumeirah by monorail (from the mainland to Atlantis). Walk around Atlantis waterpark if travelling with children. Nakheel Mall has a great rooftop viewpoint. In the afternoon, head to JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) for beach time, waterfront restaurants, and sunset views of the marina.
Day 5 — Malls and Departure Shopping day. Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates (home of Ski Dubai), or Ibn Battuta Mall. Evening flight home.
The Dubai Mall Experience
The Dubai Mall is larger than 50 football pitches and honestly disorients you. Key things inside:
- Dubai Aquarium — a 10 million litre tank visible from the main floor
- Dubai Ice Rink — an Olympic-size ice skating rink (rent skates)
- VR Park — virtual reality gaming
- Kinokuniya — one of Asia's best bookshops
- The Dubai Fountain — outside, visible from the waterfront walkway (free)
Where to Stay
Downtown Dubai — walkable to Burj Khalifa, best for sightseers. Options from business hotels (Hyatt Place, Ramada) to the Armani Hotel inside the Burj itself.
Bur Dubai / Deira — the most affordable area, with excellent Indian restaurants, souks, and easy Metro access. For budget travellers, this is the smart choice.
Dubai Marina / JBR — best for beach access and a younger, more international vibe.
What to Buy in Dubai
Gold Souk — Dubai's gold prices are among the world's lowest because there is no import duty. Making charges are negotiable. Bring designs from home and have jewellery made to order.
Perfumes — Arabic oud-based perfumes are extraordinary and unique to the region. Al Haramain and Swiss Arabian make excellent ones at a fraction of Western prices.
Chocolates and dates — premium Bateel dates and patchi chocolates make ideal gifts.
Electronics — prices are similar to India for most electronics. Don't expect dramatic savings.
Food in Dubai
Dubai has some of the world's most diverse restaurant scenes — you can eat your way through 100 countries within a 2km radius of Downtown. But for Indian travellers, the most delightful discovery is often how good the Indian food is. A community of 3 million Indians has created an authenticity that rivals the source — Kerala sadyas, Mumbai street food, Hyderabadi biryani, and South Indian tiffin all prepared by cooks who grew up making these dishes.
Book Burj Khalifa Online
Walk-up tickets at Burj Khalifa cost AED 400+. Online advance tickets cost AED 140–180. Book 2-3 days ahead at the official website. The sunset slot (6-8pm) is the best — you see both day and night views from one visit.
Desert Safari — Evening Only
Morning desert safaris exist but the evening one (2:30pm pick-up to 10pm return) is the definitive experience — dune bashing, sunset over the dunes, Bedouin camp dinner. Don't do the cheaper morning version as your only safari.
Things to Carry
Avoid These Mistakes
- Not booking Burj Khalifa tickets in advance — same-day tickets cost 3x more or sell out
- Underestimating walking distances in the Dubai Mall — it takes 40 minutes to walk end to end
- Forgetting to carry cash for souks — card machines are rare in the Gold Souk
- Taking regular taxis instead of Uber/Careem — metered apps are 40% cheaper
- Planning beach time in summer (June-September) — the heat is genuinely dangerous. Stick to indoor activities or skip the summer entirely
